    Small But A Nice Feature

At home, I have a 50-gallon tank with African Cichlids with lots of rocks and gravel. However at work, I have a Marineland Hex 5. It is almost maintenance free. Place about an inch of gravel in the tank with a couple of goldfish for a month. This will get the bacteria started in the `clean’ gravel. Or you can buy bacteria at a pet store to speed things up. The filtration system is almost too much (which is good) and keeps the water healthy. This tank is not for a lot of fish or exotic species. I have six `neon’s’ in my tank, but any small fish that does not require regular pH or ammonia checks is the way to go. A few plastic green plants (tall and thin) will look nice. I usually keep the light off as it can heat up fairly well and I keep it far away from sunlight. You will get algae growing on the inside walls, but this is easily cleaned with a small scrubber. Change about 1/3 of the water every six weeks. Better yet, read about the fish you want and their requirements before you get started.

I have had this tank 2 times and each time i have had major issues with the filter. The first one never seemed to pull the water correctly and the water had to be at the highest in order to function. My new one after is once again about a year old and i have called the company 3 times to help with filter issues and again it isn’t functioning….. i’m glad i kept that new filter i got to replace the last faulty one. The light size and shape are excellent though as long as you have only a few fish.

    Alright, but not satisfactory.

I bought this tank for my comet. The filter would do something weird; this happened twice, it stopped working for like a day, then went back to working. The filter was pretty crappy, anyways. My tank was always cloudy, and the light broke. Luckily, my Dad managed to turn the light fixture around, and the other side had another socket.

All in all, I ended up just getting a ten gallon, and so far it’s working out better. I wouldn’t reccomend this tank to anyone intending to keep big fish.

We’ve had this for just under one year. We started with fancy guppies (one male and a harem of three) and a few live plants (some floating, some planted in the gravel & minimal clay substrate mix). A few surprise pond snails came with the plants. It never receives full sunlight, and we’ve never had any algae. The guppies have bred several times, and we’ve had to transfer the excess fish out occasionally to our two 55 gallon tanks. Originally, we purchased it as a quarantine tank, but it’s been so easy to maintain that it’s become a permanent tank for the guppies. Maintenance tips we’ve learned: don’t let the water fall below the pump exhaust by more than an inch. When the water level drops enough, the pump can’t generate enough pressure to lift the water. Not a problem, just top it off occasionally as part of normal servicing. Also, with our live plants, the pump occasionally gets plugged with dead plant detritus. Just pull the intake stem off (unplug the pump and remove it from the tank, of course). Pull the bottom of the impeller housing off, remove the impeller and use an old toothbrush to thoroughly clean the impeller and inside the housing. Reassemble, top off the water, and plug it back in. Great little tank.

Nice Aquarium but very poor filtration

I have two of these aquariums. One in each of our kids rooms. We loved the Hex shape and size of the tank. We filled each aquarium with distilled water. Each tank has one betta and two cory catfish. We have never been able to get clear water from either of these tanks. I am not impressed with the filter or bio wheel system. It provides little circulation and more water appears to go around the filter cartridge than through them. After waiting two months for the water to clear I plan to try an internal filter to see if I can get better results. I also tried the polishing pad and carbon bags idea but water remains cloudy. I’ve tested for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates and all appear normal.
